In Flight Quilt

A wee while ago now... perhaps just over a year or so?... I happily signed up to test patterns for Juliet @ Tartankiwi's first sew-along.  If you've been here before you'll know I'm a big fan of Juliet's work and feel lucky to call her my friend.  Bonus all round!

The various ways of interpreting this collection into a quilt is huge - so many options and possibilities!  I decided on a combination of Liberty florals and different hues of blue Sketch.  And I can happily say it has turned out pretty much the way I saw it in my head.

I got stuck in and about a third of the way through ran out of fabric... so with great restraint (hahah!) I added some new Liberty to my stash... and of course Sketch.  The blue has been severely depleted and there are literally scraps left... and there are a couple of non-bird blocks that have a join or two. But we made it!

I found the backing fabric rather unexpectedly at a local fabric shop in New Lynn while doing an emergency dash for some cotton.  It was love in all it's blue flowery perfection.  If memory serves it was sent off to Leeanne for quilting in December last year.  In January we got the news and Leeanne was generously able to squeeze it in before we left!  Such a legend - thank you!!  It arrived two days before we flew out and went onto our bed when we moved in to a house here.

As with Juliet's patterns they are well written, constructed and a joy to sew.  Doing the 24" blocks for the first time was a bit of a challenge... but the results... delicious.   She really captured the movement of the birds and they truly do appear as if "In Flight".  Leeanne did a stunning job of quilting it and the swirls and clouds add to the effect of the birds moving through the sky.  There is also quilting detail of outlines and feathers within the birds too.  Really hard to photograph with all those flowers but oh so lovely.

This quilt was completed to one of the original design layouts. Since then the range of birds have expanded and so have the layout options. There are three additional birds that now form part of the collection, along with an alternative seagull pattern, and many of them come in varying sizes too. All these elements add huge scope and possibilities to the design of the quilt.

Working on a larger scale project like this was a great learning opportunity.  The size of the blocks, the scale of it overall, fabric selections, little details and the bigger picture.  I always enjoy working with Juliet and to be able to help with this project was humbling.  It has been lovely to see the patterns being released over the year and all the various interpretations thereof.  I think the sew-along is about to conclude and it will be fun to go and see other completed projects.  Head on over to have a look, and of course Juliet's own gorgeous one!

It is a lovely big quilt and has been in use since March - first without binding and for the last few months, with binding!  It reminds me of many things, times and places and helped make our room feel like home.  One of the joys of quilts.

Show & Tell: Create

Hi Everyone,

Show & Tell Thursday's

A lovely friend had been admiring a pouch that I take with me everywhere, so I decided to make her a nice roomy pouch for her recent birthday.

Somehow I remembered the free "Create" paper pieced pattern from Make Modern by Kristy @ Quiet Play. I reduced the size by about 80% from memory so it would fit on the side of the pouch. The pieces were rather teeny tiny but still worked out ok!

I love the "denim" look of the fabric which was ironically given to me by the same friend a while back. The lining was some leftover fabric from the Ironing Board Cover Swap last year, and I thought was perfect for this project.

I made most of it up as I went along. Boxed corners are my new favourite thing too - and it has the bonus of some extra maths :p And of course a bit of outline stitching never goes amiss.

The one thing that irks me with pouches is that I can never get the "corners" to be as beautiful as I want them. Teeth to the lining, teeth to the outer... of course some results are better than others but never as perfect as I want them to be... If you have a foolproof tip for zip corners do share!

Overall I was really delighted with it and I know it's being used already! Hoorah!

So, what delights, tips, tricks or makings can you share with us this week?
Hope you're enjoying the school holidays!

Show & Tell: Twinkle Toes

Phew - it's that time again already!

Show & Tell Thursday's

Ages ago I was lucky enough to test another one of Juliet's awesome patterns - the Ballerina. Such a gorgeous design that captures the grace of a ballet dancer beautifully. After I made the block I started getting ideas about turning it into a bag.

A few weeks/months later, the girls were invited to a little friends' fifth birthday... From memory I was pretty sure this sweet wee girl was a bit keen on dancing, so I sat down and worked out how this bag was going to come together. Thankfully Juliet had also sent me her Ballet shoes pattern - such a nice complimentary pattern combined with the ballerina isn't it?

I'm happy to say that all my maths and calculations worked out and I was super happy with how it turned out. Specially given I hadn't made anything quite like it before! Segmented inside pockets and boxed corners even! Happy dance :)

In time I might make another one for my girls... But there are quite alot of other things on the list before then!

How are your holidays going? Is the sun shining where you are? Getting into Christmas/Holiday or other crafting?
Looking forward to seeing what you've been up to!

Show & Tell: Written Record

And so another Thursday rolls along...

Show & Tell Thursday's

A couple of months ago I received Patchwork Please, as hoped, for my birthday. I was super excited and loved all the gorgeous ideas and patterns in it, especially as I'd heard and read many great things about it!

I almost immediately set about making this pencil case as a "returning to uni" gift.

However, perhaps I need to go back to uni, because I did not find the instructions smooth sailing...and I have sewn one or two things in recent years. Is it just me?

I got there in the end, and am delighted with the final result.

It's a wee bit small though, but you can probably manage to fit a few highlighters or maybe other random stuff in there. I love the pencils and thought them very appropriate...though they will need a few sharpenings before they'll fit in!

What's your experience with this gorgeous book? Or do you have recommendations on treasure-trove-must-own-project-books or any not-on-your-lemon-do-you-want-to-go-there books?
Share share!
Hope you're all having a happy sunshiny week!

Show & Tell: The Butterfly Challenge

Hey Everyone,

Show & Tell Thursday's

So, you know my friend Juliet, who's incredible paper piecing design talents I'm always harping on about?  Well.  Between taking over the world with her amazing patters (ahem - have you seen big bear??), getting published and being a great mum, she set a wee challenge last month around her Butterfly patterns. I do so love a good challenge... :)

The Tartankiwi

A few ideas came and went but this one stuck the most... Turn those little butterflies into a flower :) I had a slightly bigger vision... of three butterfly-flowers in different colours, and perhaps turning them into a wee quilt... but you all know what time often does to grand dreams... Anyhoos - I present my one flower :)

The details:
- I used Juliet's small butterfly pattern and reduced it to 80% - in order for the flower not to be humongous once all the small butterflies were combined.  The total size as pictured is 18"x18".
- The petals were hand-drawn - I do like how they all ended up looking a bit like hearts :)
- I quilted the middle with pebbles - a first! My eyes actually started tearing up from not daring to blink while at it - didn't want to break the momentum!
- The wings have wee twirly-whirly bits quilted in them too - spurred on by not totally screwing up the pebbling, I thought I'd give it a go.

At one point I also envisioned there being extra petals between the butterfly ones. So I set about drawing a paper-pieced pattern to make it so! Was a bit happy with the result, though I decided against adding them in the end, and have the quilting make the picture.

So who knows what it will become - a large cushion? A bag? Maybe there will be some extra "flowers" one day to make it into a quilt? Or something else entirely? For now, it's a completed block for the challenge. A butterfly flower :) Or perhaps it's an inverted four leaf clover? Will it bring me luck? :p

Did you get into the challenge and do something a bit different with Juliet's butterflies? There's still time if you're keen! And did I mention the awesome prizes??
Looking forward to seeing what you've been making this week!

Show & Tell - One, Two, Toucan!

Hi everyone!

Show & Tell Thursday's

How're thing ticking along in your worlds? A couple of weeks ago I Finally did something with my Toucan block. Nothing mind-bending but you know - it's complete! A wee cushion to accompany the book as a birthday gift for a little boy. He's such a happy character that Toucan isn't he?

The completed test block has been sitting here for a while and I was pretty certain it would become a cushion cover to team up with the book. But it just didn't move up the to-do list very quickly. Then one evening I found my hands at a loose end and got cracking on hand-quilting around the little guy.

As soon as he was quilted, he got the border, the back, a cushion popped in and boom! Done! And ready for a new home :)

I so love finishing projects - Sticking it out through the not so fascinating, almost at the end parts just to reach that golden finished moment....ahhhh! What about you? Do you like to finish and finish it now or you know, whenevs?

Thanks for popping along today lovelies - looking forward to hearing from and seeing what you've been up to!

This little dude is destined to become a cushion cover and will go hand in hand with a book (surprise surprise!) as a birthday gift for our stash :)

Do you have any secret squirrel projects you can share? Do you keep a birthday gift stash too?
Tell me all about it!
Looking forward to hearing from you!
