In Flight Quilt

A wee while ago now... perhaps just over a year or so?... I happily signed up to test patterns for Juliet @ Tartankiwi's first sew-along.  If you've been here before you'll know I'm a big fan of Juliet's work and feel lucky to call her my friend.  Bonus all round!

The various ways of interpreting this collection into a quilt is huge - so many options and possibilities!  I decided on a combination of Liberty florals and different hues of blue Sketch.  And I can happily say it has turned out pretty much the way I saw it in my head.

I got stuck in and about a third of the way through ran out of fabric... so with great restraint (hahah!) I added some new Liberty to my stash... and of course Sketch.  The blue has been severely depleted and there are literally scraps left... and there are a couple of non-bird blocks that have a join or two. But we made it!

I found the backing fabric rather unexpectedly at a local fabric shop in New Lynn while doing an emergency dash for some cotton.  It was love in all it's blue flowery perfection.  If memory serves it was sent off to Leeanne for quilting in December last year.  In January we got the news and Leeanne was generously able to squeeze it in before we left!  Such a legend - thank you!!  It arrived two days before we flew out and went onto our bed when we moved in to a house here.

As with Juliet's patterns they are well written, constructed and a joy to sew.  Doing the 24" blocks for the first time was a bit of a challenge... but the results... delicious.   She really captured the movement of the birds and they truly do appear as if "In Flight".  Leeanne did a stunning job of quilting it and the swirls and clouds add to the effect of the birds moving through the sky.  There is also quilting detail of outlines and feathers within the birds too.  Really hard to photograph with all those flowers but oh so lovely.

This quilt was completed to one of the original design layouts. Since then the range of birds have expanded and so have the layout options. There are three additional birds that now form part of the collection, along with an alternative seagull pattern, and many of them come in varying sizes too. All these elements add huge scope and possibilities to the design of the quilt.

Working on a larger scale project like this was a great learning opportunity.  The size of the blocks, the scale of it overall, fabric selections, little details and the bigger picture.  I always enjoy working with Juliet and to be able to help with this project was humbling.  It has been lovely to see the patterns being released over the year and all the various interpretations thereof.  I think the sew-along is about to conclude and it will be fun to go and see other completed projects.  Head on over to have a look, and of course Juliet's own gorgeous one!

It is a lovely big quilt and has been in use since March - first without binding and for the last few months, with binding!  It reminds me of many things, times and places and helped make our room feel like home.  One of the joys of quilts.

Completed: Pacific Crest Quilt

Stone the crows.  A post about sewing?!   Though this was actually sewn, quilted, completed and given in January...  Yeah, long time ago now but things have been a bit busy ;p

Anyhoos.  Toward the end of last year I was lucky enough to win a copy of Beyond Neutral from Deb.  She raved about the patterns, and has indeed made every. single. one. of the quilts in this book.  It's not hard to see why.

As I'd been thinking about a quilt to make as a birthday gift for my sister-in-law, then the book arrived and I fell in love with Pacific Crest (among others).  I had a colour scheme in mind so ordered a couple of extra fabrics to get started.

Some of these I've had for a few years.  The background fabric was specifically bought for this quilt because of the colour and design and recipient.  I love it.  When it arrived I was thrilled with the extra selections.  Those little mice!  So cute!

The pattern was simple and it produced a lovely large quilt.  The small vintage sheet stash was delved in to for the backing.  And to add some extra interest all the little leftover bits where sewn together.

Off it went to Leeanne for quilting.  We decided to keep it simple in the end, so as to compliment the modern strong design of the pattern, with varying horizontal lines.

Grey binding to frame it and it was ready.  I really love this quilt - the colours and the design make me sigh contentedly.

Always nice to gift something that you love.

Show & Tell: One plus One is Two done

Hi ho hi ho, here we go!

Show & Tell Thursday's

Whilst wrapping up Anya's quilt, I'd been thinking about what sort of quilt to do for Heidi. A very different girl in pretty much every way from her big sister - logical, detailed, loves orange, zebras and black and white, precise and loves manuals and instructions - along with all her other sweetness and light qualities of course ; ).

I saw lots of plus quilts over the last year or so and slowly it started sticking in my mind. A plan started evolving. The more it developed the more it seemed perfect for Heidi. So I drew up some coloured-in plans and Heidi fell in love with the concept. Hubster was away for most of May and in those few weeks I got cracking.

Every morning Heidi woke up and came to see which blocks had been completed and ticked them off against the drawn-up plan. She was pretty excited and loved being involved in the process. Can you imagine how striking it would have looked in solids? I decided to go for patterned fabric for the most part to soften it and hopefully help it stand the test of time. The whites were low volume or white on white for the most part.

And then the back...what to do what to do... oooo a big plus! So a few sums, some more drawing and colouring in later, the back came together using every last scrap. And Heidi really wanted her name on it too, so we made that happen :)

Off it went to Leeanne to be quilted. Despite the stupid mistake I made of pressing all the seams open, we came up with a plan.  We do so love what she did and how it turned out!  We were also really lucky to be able to collect it from her at the Kumeu Quilt Show a few weeks ago.  It was so lovely to meet Leeanne and Heidi talked about the "girl" who made the patterns on her quilt for days.  What a treat for us!!

We came home and I bound it straight away. Since then she has played, cuddled and been sleeping under it daily. She loves it to bits - warm happy fluffy feelings : )

And the plan for the third one is slowly taking shape... but it may be a wee way off for now!
What plans, big or small, are you working on?
Hope you have a happy day!

Show & Tell: A long time coming...

Happy Thursday!
Show & Tell Thursday's

Today I am so happy to finally show you a very long work in progress that was completed at midnight one Friday night a few weeks ago.  (Yeah I know my Fridays nights are crazy : p)  Brace yourselves.  It's a bit of a long post...

The Sampler Quilt

At the beginning of 2012 I signed up for the Modern Sampler Block Bee... Gosh have I learned alot since then! I knew nothing of 1/4" seams, rotary cutters, quilting, hexies, binding, all the gorgeous quilting fabrics, paper piecing, and so on and so forth. Nothing. Now here we are. This is the project/quilt that started it for me and it is now the 6th quilt I've completed. No that's not very many, but for me it's alot, and I've got another one in the wings and yet another that's a few weeks away from being bound!  Making quilts is now part of me.

As you've noticed it's not 'my' quilt as such. Somewhere along the line I decided it would be for Anya. For her 5th birthday. She is now well over 6... anyhoos. Good things take time right? Half of the blocks in here were from other bee members - Laura, Nin, Juliet, Cat, Treena, Lisa, KelliSharon, Deb... (I hope i haven't forgotten anyone? And see that Butterfly?  Juliet designed and made it especially for Anya - Lucky!!)  Thank you ladies for your gorgeous blocks - we still love them!

It took ages for me to find sashing in a shade and pattern of pink that I was happy with.  Eventually after lots of trials and discussions (and months!) we found a winner.  The top was finally put together!

In November last year it went off to Leeanne who quilted it. I still marvel at the beauty of her work every time I see it. Isn't is just exquisite and perfect?

The next challenge was finding binding fabric that I was happy with... I probably sound pedantic but after all that effort and time and cost... I was not going to blow it on just making do. The hunt lasted for a few months until we stumbled upon the patterned green fabric at Spotlight in April. Yes! The right shade, not solid, perfect!

The night after I finished the baby quilt from last week, I sat down and sewed the binding on. And once it was started, it had to be completed! Almost 2 1/2 years later, it was finished. All  70"x 84" (180 x 213cm) of it.  Just like that.

Anya woke up the next morning under her new quilt. She ran into our room to wake me and tell me that: "I woke up Mummy and thought the blanket felt different. Then I looked down and saw it was my quilt! It's finished! Thank you Mummy! I love it!" and off she went, dragging it to the living room where she proceeded to use it for the rest of the weekend. I could not have asked for a better reaction. Yay!

Hooray for finishes!!
Do you have any finishes to share?  Or have you embarked on any big projects?  Do share, do tell!
Thanks for stopping in lovelies - always nice to see your faces : )

Show & Tell: Triangulate

Hello hello!

Show & Tell Thursday's

Anya had a lovely teacher last term.  Had... because she is now on maternity leave!  We wanted to give her something special and a little different for her wee little girl when she arrives and beyond.  Queue a quilt!

I decided pretty much overnight to try a triangle quilt in pink, aqua/blue and grey.

And best of all I had all the fabric in my stash!  Some I've had for a few years now, and some arrived recently!  Bonus bonus.  Many were favourites that I'd been saving for something special like this.

I looked up triangle quilts - guess what?  They're called Isoceles triangle quilts! Sounds fancy eh?  There are a number of tutorials, tips and tricks out there.  I just ended up going for it and learned as I went.   The rows were 6" high and triangles from that, and just kept going until I was happy with the size.

I'd love to hear if anyone has tricks for getting perfect points every time...  I had cut the triangles accurately, had sewn the seams exactly and handled the fabric carefully.   Still there were some intersections between the rows that were not as precise as I'd have liked...  Any recommendations?  Advice?  Help?  For next time?

I straight line quilted for the most part, with interspersed complete triangles.  the whole thing was entirely cotton so safe for a baby and beyond.  Finished size: 214m x 142cm.  I really loved how it turned out.  The colours, the patterns, and that baby fabric!

Anya and I dropped it round to her teacher a few weeks ago. She loved it, her reaction was just the best!We hope they will get lots of years of enjoyment from it  : )

What did you get up to over the holidays?  Have you started any winter projects yet?
Thanks you guys for stopping by and linking up. Always hugely inspiring!
